Vaccines don’t cause autism

Surprise, Andrew Wakefield, a doctor who pushed the (unproven and unsupported by many trials) hypothesis that the Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccination was linked to autism has been discharged from the General Medical Council. They say he was “dishonest”, “misleading”, and “irresponsible” in his research.

Stephen Hawking: We were jerks, so why wouldn’t aliens be?

Stephen Hawking thinks making contact with an alien race might be a bad deal for humans. His logic is impeccable: what if they’re like us?

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

Daylight Saving Time Wastes Energy

Some scientists did a study when Indiana adopted Daylight Saving Time statewide in 2006. They found that energy costs went up. Apparently, heating and cooling costs more than offset the savings in lighting costs.

Make Way for the Largest Island in a Lake on an Island in a Lake on an Island

Make Way for the Largest Island in a Lake on an Island in a Lake on an Island

Qualifiers are a lot of fun. Example: Greenland is the world’s largest island. The world’s largest lake is the Caspian Sea.

But the world’s largest island on a lake, on an island, on a lake, on an island?

Then the title goes to Volcan Point in the Philippines. Treehugger has a great series of zoom-in photos that show you how that complicated geological title was won.

Rapture Ready forum-goers hate today’s Google logo

missinglink Rapture Ready forum goers hate todays Google logo
Today’s Google logo depicts: “Scientist unveil fossil of Darwinian masillae”

Posters on the Rapture Ready forum, who can’t wait for the world to end, had this to say:

I find myself mad and in disbelief that googel would celebrate such an out right falsehood.

Its a monkey people!!!

…..

I saw it and was going to post on it as well but you beat me to it. I almost threw my laptop it made me soooooooooo mad! Made me wonder what the logo would look like after we’re taken outta here!

…..

I never use liberal Google either.

…..

This is just disgusting.
Disgusting.

…..

Gee Whiz, if Google is trying to stay in touch with what is going on in the world today, they should change their logo to have burning red flames of fire around it…… GOOHELL

Science Is Imagination

To those who think “scientism” — the belief that science can potentially explain everything — indicates a lack of imagination:

It took a vast leap of imagination for Max Planck to think of gas molecules in the Sun to behave like little springs, oscillating away, able to eject only specific colors of light. It took a leap of imagination for Alan Guth to think that the Big Bang theory wasn’t wrong, but incomplete, and to add inflation to explain why the Universe looks so smooth. It took Darwin’s breadth of imagination to correlate the vast amount of data he collected, and see that it was the unthinking mind of nature that forced species to adapt or die.

Harkin Is Disappointed

Senator Tom Harkin is disappointed that an alternative medicine center he helped to fund has been disproving alternative therapies.

“One of the purposes of this center was to investigate and validate alternative approaches. Quite frankly, I must say publicly that it has fallen short,” Harkin said.

The senator went on to lament that, since its inception in 1998, the focus of NCCAM has been “disproving things rather than seeking out and approving things.”

Damn you, Science!

Magenta Is Not a Real Color

Magenta Is Not a Real Color
This is interesting. In the electromagnetic spectrum, there is no such color as magenta. Colors reside in the visible spectrum, with ultraviolet on one side and infrared on the other. Violet has the shortest wavelength, and red has the longest. Blues and greens and yellows all live between the two, but there’s nowhere for a color that is a mix of the two. Here’s another figure, with some context:
