Mayor Bloomberg and the mosque

Mayor Bloomberg gave a pretty great speech today, explaining why no one should be fighting the Muslim community center that will be built sort of near Ground Zero. Specifically, he explains that it’s about freedom and tolerance and how we’re supposed to treat people in America.

Pledge of Allegiance facts!

If it were from fiction, would it be too on-the-nose that the words “under God” LITERALLY DIVIDE “one nation” from “indivisible”? Anyway, here are some random facts taken from Wikipedia’s Pledge of Allegiance article:

  • It was originally written by a socialist.
  • Eisenhower, president when “under God” was added, was raised a Jehovah’s Witness.
  • The Jehovah’s Witnesses were the most prominent legal challengers to the pledge in the 1940s, as it violates their religion to pledge allegiance to anything other than God.
  • “Under God” was inspired by President Lincoln’s usage of it in the Gettysburg Address.
  • Apparently, in Lincoln’s time, “under God” was a way of saying “God willing”, so its usage in the Pledge would be grammatically wrong by Lincoln’s standards.

It is patriotic and constitutional to remove God from government

[Palin] asserted that America needs to get back to its Christian roots and rejected any notion that "God should be separated from the state."

It’s frustrating to me that Sarah Palin claims to respect the constitution and calls her opponents unamerican, all the while speaking out against constitutional principles.

I think more should be made of the fact that demanding the government favor religion or faith is in fact unconstitional, unamerican, and unpatriotic.
