In the DMZ, the North Korean guards face other, so neither can defect

In the DMZ, the North Korean guards face other, so neither can defect

All North Korean border guards are armed with pistols, and are well-fed officers who stand in rigid military posture. In each space, two North Korean soldiers stand facing each other rather than the South, so that neither one can defect to the South, and another guard stands behind them facing the North to prevent anyone else from defecting.

Some clothes are illegal in France, Saudi Arabia, Bhutan, North Korea, and Sudan

In France, you can’t wear burqas. Men can’t cross-dress and women can’t show skin in Saudi Arabia. Bhutan has a very specific national dress code that everyone must follow or be fined. In North Korea (surprise!), people must dress “in accordance with our people’s emotion and taste”, which means no pants for women and short hair for men. (They can grow it a bit longer if they need to hide a bald spot.) Women also can’t wear pants in Sudan.

The USS Pueblo gives North Korea the finger

Only one US vessel is in captivity. It’s the USS Pueblo, and it’s still being held in North Korea, where it was captured in 1968.

The North Koreans kept the crew as prisoners and sent out regular photos of the men along with testimonials from them about how fantastic North Korea was. Of course, the Americans were being put up to it, and they made this clear to the folks back home by giving the North Korean photographers the finger, which the captors didn’t understand.

Kim Jong-il hates players, not game

For the World Cup, North Korea banned broadcasting the games live to avoid potential embarrassment. Oh but then they only lost 2-1 to the mighty Brazil, so the next game became North Korea’s first live sports broadcast ever. Unfortunately, in that game, North Korea lost to Portugal by a staggering 7 points. So naturally, as any reasonable government would, North Korea held a six-hour public inquiry, heaping criticism and shame on the players.

However, media in South Korea said the players got off lightly by North Korean standards.
“In the past, North Korean athletes and coaches who performed badly were sent to prison camps,” a South Korean intelligence source told the Chosun Ilbo newspaper.
