Kim Jong-il hates players, not game

For the World Cup, North Korea banned broadcasting the games live to avoid potential embarrassment. Oh but then they only lost 2-1 to the mighty Brazil, so the next game became North Korea’s first live sports broadcast ever. Unfortunately, in that game, North Korea lost to Portugal by a staggering 7 points. So naturally, as any reasonable government would, North Korea held a six-hour public inquiry, heaping criticism and shame on the players.

However, media in South Korea said the players got off lightly by North Korean standards.
“In the past, North Korean athletes and coaches who performed badly were sent to prison camps,” a South Korean intelligence source told the Chosun Ilbo newspaper.

If the chart looks bad, blame the author, not the data

Nathan Yau at Flowing Data is annoyed by this unnecessarily complicated chart made to ridicule Health Care Reform. It was created by Republicans Sam Brownback and Kevin Brady, and it’s been passed around approvingly in conservative circles by people who don’t really care if it’s accurate.

Looking at this horribly designed piece of propaganda makes me want to throw up. I’m throwing up right now. Dang it. Someone owes me a new keyboard.

Goldman Sachs bans swears in emails

Goldman Sachs is dealing with their ethical lapses by installing software that blocks dirty words from emails. I applaud this gesture and look forward to future enhancements that will keep employees from using bad grammar, neglecting to say please and thank you, and forgetting their coworkers’ birthdays.

The anchoring effect

You Are Not So Smart posted an article on the anchoring effect. The anchoring effect happens when you need to estimate a number of some kind — like a statistic or a price point — and you use some other number for reference, even if there is no real reason to think that other number tells you anything.

This is why you’re more likely to buy a leather jacket for $400 if the price tag originally said $1000. And it apparently also works when you know the anchor number has nothing to do with your estimate. The article recounts a 2006 MIT study where subjects wrote down digits from their social security numbers and then bid on items in an auction. Subjects who wrote down higher (essentially random) numbers bid higher in the auction.

John Boehner gets cute with acronyms

John Boehner is proposing a bill to limit new federal regulations. He calls it the REINS Act, which stands for “Regulations from the Executive In Need of Scrutiny”.

I welcome this new era of passive-aggressive bill names and look forward to future bills like A Certain Texan Under-Performed (ACTUP), Cool your Ass down Leader of the Minority (CALM), and the STFUJB Act.
