If it were from fiction, would it be too on-the-nose that the words “under God” LITERALLY DIVIDE “one nation” from “indivisible”? Anyway, here are some random facts taken from Wikipedia’s Pledge of Allegiance article:
- It was originally written by a socialist.
- Eisenhower, president when “under God” was added, was raised a Jehovah’s Witness.
- The Jehovah’s Witnesses were the most prominent legal challengers to the pledge in the 1940s, as it violates their religion to pledge allegiance to anything other than God.
- “Under God” was inspired by President Lincoln’s usage of it in the Gettysburg Address.
- Apparently, in Lincoln’s time, “under God” was a way of saying “God willing”, so its usage in the Pledge would be grammatically wrong by Lincoln’s standards.
