Football – Gridiron and Association

I just took a soccer-themed trip through Wikipedia. I wanted to know why American football is called football and where the word soccer came from.

The answer is that American football descends from a broad family of sports that go back a long long time. American football and Canadian football are forms of gridiron football, which developed from rugby. Of course, rugby can also be called rugby football.

So American football has just as much right to the name as soccer does. Soccer can be more properly called association football, and the word soccer comes from the word association.

Also, internet misinformation is always fun: American football is called football “because the ball is 12 inches long, 1 foot”.
