The Hunted Senator

This is fun. There’s a bill in the senate that would establish a searchable database of federal grants and contracts. This would make government spending more transparent and probably would help in the fight against earmarks. However, the bill can’t move forward because some senator is putting a “secret hold” on it. This is nuts to me, but it seems that any senator can put an anonymous hold on legislation. So one senator is holding up a popular (and seemingly useful) bill for reasons that are difficult to imagine without a whole heap of cynicism.

Oh, but the fun part: several websites including TPM Muckraker are soliciting and tallying denials from senators. As of this writing, they’ve gotten 75 senators to deny involvement in the secret hold. Ah, the pressure’s on.
