Guantanamo Bay Naval Base

Wikipedia time! … I was reading the umpteenth thing about Guantanamo when I realized that I didn’t actually know where Guantanamo was. I’m sure I had heard “Guantanamo Bay Cuba” at some point, but I must have dismissed it. I mean, how would the US have a naval base on an enemy island?

So here’s some nice history from the Wikipedia. After the Spanish-American war, the US started leasing an area around Guantanamo Bay, maintaining a naval station that had been established during the war. Somehow, the lease has been maintained since then, despite the Cuban government hating the arrangement. (They don’t cash our checks anymore.)

Until the revolution that brought Castro to power, Guantanamo employed thousands of Cubans. After the revolution, the employment continued, but the Cuban government disallowed new hiring. So today there are two elderly Cubans who go to work every day at Guantanamo.
