Dover’s Erstwhile School Board Takes Another Hit

A federal judge ruled that it’s unconstitutional to require that a Darwin-doubting, ID-promoting statement be read in science classes. Further, he thinks the former school board members who promoted the policy lied about their motives. Oh burn:

Said the judge: “It is ironic that several of these individuals, who so staunchly and proudly touted their religious convictions in public, would time and again lie to cover their tracks and disguise the real purpose behind the ID Policy.”

Here’s the statement that was read to students (with my helpful annotations):

The Pennsylvania Academic Standards require students to learn about Darwin’s theory of evolution and eventually to take a standardized test of which evolution is a part.

Because Darwin’s theory is a theory, it continues to be tested as new evidence is discovered. The theory is not a fact. Gaps in the theory exist for which there is no evidence. A theory is defined as a well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations. Incidentally, Gravity is also a theory.

Intelligent design is an explanation (note that I didn’t say ‘theory’) of the origin of life that differs from Darwin’s view. The reference book, “Of Pandas and People,” is available in the library along with other resources for students who might be interested in gaining an understanding of what intelligent design actually involves.

With respect to any theory (which, I want to emphasize, does not include ID), students are encouraged to keep an open mind. The school leaves the discussion of the origins of life to individual students and their families. This will be especially useful to those of you whose parents are biologists. As a standards-driven district, class instruction focuses upon preparing students to achieve proficiency on standards-based assessments.

Abstinence Class

Excerpts from the teaching materials for federally-funded abstinence education.

Circle the item(s) that can be totally eliminated through the use of a condom: infertility, isolation, jealousy, poverty, heartbreak, pregnancy, AIDS, substance abuse, genital herpes, unstable long-term commitments, meaningless wedding, distrust of others, sexual violence, cervical cancer, personal disappointment, feelings of being used, pelvic inflammatory disease, loss of reputation, suicide.

Now cross out the item(s) that can be eliminated by being abstinent until marriage.

There’s also a nice passage about how women shouldn’t tell men what to do.

311 and Scott Stapp Fight

He stepped in front of the screen and said, “311, I am ready to fight,” according to Sexton.

Sexton said the band tried to defuse the situation, and Stapp went to the bar to drink. Later, he made “inappropriate” comments to Martinez’s wife, and was confrontational with Sexton.

“All of a sudden, he clocked me in the left side of my face,” Sexton said. “Then a huge fight broke out.”

….

But Jonathan Jordan, director of security at the hotel, said the incident was captured on security cameras. He said Stapp was “attacked” by several members of 311 and that it took two security guards to break up the fight.

“It was definitely started by 311,” Jordan said.

Another one for the who-do-you-root-for file.

Jury Duty for Presidents and Would-Bes

Bush was called for jury duty. And as the article notes, John Kerry was the lead juror for a case last month. (In fact, Jay Leno made a retarded joke about it.)

Squirrels Bite (and Kill) Dog

In Russia, a pack of squirrels reportedly killed a dog. The theory is that they were so hungry amid a pine cone shortage that they went to extremes looking for protein. Yikes.

A “big” stray dog was nosing about the trees and barking at squirrels hiding in branches overhead when a number of them suddenly descended and attacked, reports say.
